Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.
This black silk obi is covered with a classic pattern of Matsu within Seigaiha.
Matsu, the Pine Tree, is believed to live for 100 years. It is a hardy plant that symbolises strength and long life. Samurai often planted these trees: it was believed that the long needle-like leaves, Matsuba, protected them from demons. Seigaiha ‘wave’ or ‘scale’ patterns can be seen on all forms of Japanese design. it was originally used on maps to depict the sea, and was made popular by the artist Seikai Kanshichi.
This obi is woven with cherry red, gold and silver threads. Please note that the more loosely woven areas should be handled gently as the thread can be caught on jewellery.
This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan. It is approximately 30 years old, and in excellent condition.
Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
