Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.
A classic pattern of ‘choucho’ amongst 'ryuusu'. 'Choucho', butterflies have been a popular symbol since the Nara period, 710 to 794 AD. They are signs of joy and longevity. 'Ryuusu', wandering streams are often found on the fabric designs, usually a background or linking other design motifs such as here.
This obi is heavily embroidered with shades of coral red and warm red threads, silver and gold. Some of the weaving can be easily snagged with jewellery so need to be handled gently!
This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan. It is approximately 30 -40 years old, and in excellent condition.
Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
